The ASTRA museum outside Sibiu is one of the largest open-air museums in Europe: over 300 buildings across 96 hectares of the Dumbrava forest, connected by ten kilometres of paths around a lake.

The organising principle is occupational rather than regional. Buildings are grouped by the trade practised in them — milling, oil pressing, mining, pottery, weaving, tanning, fishing — with the working machinery installed, so the site reads as a survey of pre-industrial rural technology across the whole of Romania, including Transylvania, Moldavia, Wallachia and the Danube delta.

Watermills and windmills of many types, a Roma tent settlement, churches, and craftspeople working through the season fill it.

The scale means a full day, and the site is entirely outdoors.

Sibiu itself is a Saxon town with a well-preserved German centre.
