The Athens Olympic Museum opened in 2021 in Marousi, near the Olympic stadium complex, and it covers the Games from their ancient origins at Olympia through the 1896 revival in Athens — the first modern Olympics — to the present, with substantial attention to Greek athletes and to the 2004 Athens Games.
Interactive exhibits let visitors test athletic performance against Olympic benchmarks, and the collection includes torches from successive games, medals, equipment and objects donated by athletes.
Greece occupies a permanent position in the Olympic movement: the flame is lit at Olympia before every Games, and the Greek team leads every opening ceremony parade. The museum explains why.
The 2004 material carries a complicated legacy given what happened to Greece afterwards and to many of the venues, which the museum touches on more lightly than some visitors might expect.
