Planning your visit

Winton sits in the Queensland outback, and the sheep station country around it turned out to be full of dinosaurs. Since 1999, fossils recovered from local properties have produced Australia's most important dinosaur discoveries, including Australotitan, the largest dinosaur ever found on the continent, and the museum holds the world's largest collection of Australian dinosaur fossils.

It occupies a mesa called The Jump-Up, rising above the plain with enormous views. The Fossil Preparation Laboratory is open to visitors, with volunteers working on specimens still emerging from rock — the museum runs annual digs and much of the preparation is done by the public. The Collection Room displays finished specimens, and Dinosaur Canyon holds life-sized bronze dioramas along a walkway cut into the escarpment.

March of the Titanosaurs displays a trackway of fossilised footprints, and the Gondwana Stars Observatory uses the outback's exceptional dark skies.

Winton is remote — hours from anywhere — so most visitors arrive as part of a longer outback journey.
