Baltimore was one of America's great industrial cities, and the Museum of Industry occupies a nineteenth-century oyster cannery on the Inner Harbor waterfront — an appropriate building, since canning was one of the industries that made the city.

The exhibits cover what Baltimore manufactured and how: the canneries that processed Chesapeake oysters and produce, the garment trade, printing, shipbuilding at Sparrows Point, the railroad — the Baltimore and Ohio was the first common-carrier railroad in America — and the pharmaceutical and chemical works.

The approach is hands-on. A reconstructed machine shop runs on line shafting, the print shop sets type, and demonstrations show the processes working. The labour history is present throughout: who did the work, under what conditions, for what pay, and the organising that followed.
