Bizen province produced Japan's most prolific sword-making tradition, and Osafune was its centre — at its height in the medieval period, thousands of smiths worked here, and Bizen blades survive in greater numbers than those of any other school.
The museum displays those swords with explanation of what distinguishes the Bizen style, particularly the choji hamon, a temper line resembling clove buds along the cutting edge.
The distinguishing feature is the working forge on site. Smiths, polishers, scabbard makers and fitting craftsmen work in adjacent workshops, and demonstrations of forging — the folding, hammering and quenching — run on scheduled days. Workshops let visitors try aspects of the craft, including making a small blade or knife.
Japanese swordsmithing is legally restricted, with smiths licensed and production limited, which makes the working demonstration genuinely rare.
