Boyana Church National History Museum

Boyana Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned for its 13th-century frescoes, considered precursors to the European Renaissance.

Planning your visit

Boyana Church is small — three connected buildings, the oldest from the tenth century — and it is UNESCO-listed for what is painted inside. The 1259 frescoes covering its walls are the reason: 89 scenes with 240 figures, painted with an individuality, volume and psychological presence that predates comparable developments in Italy by decades, which is why they are described as a precursor to the Renaissance.

The portraits of the donors, Sebastocrator Kaloyan and his wife Desislava, are the most reproduced images in Bulgarian art. Desislava's face in particular is startlingly specific, an actual person rather than a type.

Conservation governs the visit strictly: groups are limited to around eight people at a time and admitted for roughly ten minutes, to control humidity and temperature. Photography is prohibited.

The church sits in the Boyana district at the foot of Vitosha mountain, on the edge of Sofia.
