The Brighton Toy and Model Museum occupies four Victorian arches beneath Brighton railway station, which is an appropriate setting for a collection strongest in model railways.
Over 10,000 items fill it: gauge O and gauge 1 model trains including Marklin and Bing pieces of considerable rarity, die-cast vehicles by Dinky and Corgi, tinplate toys, dolls and dolls' houses, teddy bears, Meccano, model aircraft and ships.
The operating layouts are the draw. Several model railways run, including a large gauge O layout, and the museum's volunteers demonstrate them.
The collection concentrates on European and British manufacture across roughly 1880 to 1950, which was the golden age of the mechanical toy before plastic and electronics changed the field entirely.
