The Buckhorn began in 1881 as a saloon where a bartender offered free drinks to anyone bringing in a set of horns. Customers obliged for decades, and the accumulated result is one of the strangest collections in Texas: over 520 species of mounted wildlife, horn furniture, a chandelier made of antlers, and curiosities gathered across a century of a bar collecting whatever walked through the door.

The Texas Ranger Museum shares the building, holding authentic Ranger artefacts, firearms, badges and documents covering a force founded in 1823 whose history includes both frontier policing and considerable violence against Mexican and Native populations — a record now discussed more openly than it once was.

The saloon still operates, which makes the visit unusual: this is a working bar with a museum attached rather than the reverse.

It sits in downtown San Antonio near the River Walk and the Alamo.
