The Buffalo Museum of Science occupies a monumental 1929 building in the city's east side and covers natural history and science across several floors — palaeontology, mineralogy, zoology, botany, anthropology and astronomy — with an observatory and a hands-on Explore You gallery on the human body.

Its collections run to over 700,000 specimens, built up since the founding of the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences in 1861, and include significant Egyptian material, Native American ethnographic objects and a strong regional natural history holding covering the Niagara frontier and Great Lakes.

Buffalo's civic institutions date from the period when the city was among the wealthiest in America, and the building reflects that — grand, formal, and considerably larger than the modern city requires.

The museum also operates Tifft Nature Preserve on the waterfront.
