Tenerife's wine is older than most of Europe's colonial trades — Canary wine, the sweet malmsey Shakespeare's characters drank, was shipped to England and the Americas in quantity from the sixteenth century, and the vines here survived phylloxera, which means some rootstock is ungrafted and pre-dates the epidemic that replanted the continent.

Casa del Vino occupies a seventeenth-century Canarian mansion at El Sauzal, with a courtyard, wooden balconies and a chapel, and the exhibition covers the island's viticulture: the volcanic soils, the peculiar training systems used on the slopes, the five denominations of origin, and the grape varieties found nowhere else.

Admission to the exhibition is free; tastings and the honey museum on the same site are paid.

The terrace looks across to the coast and, on clear days, Mount Teide.
