Girona Cathedral holds two objects of first-rank importance, and the Treasury Museum exists substantially to display them.
The Tapestry of Creation, woven around 1100, is among the most significant surviving pieces of Romanesque textile art anywhere — a large embroidered hanging showing Christ Pantocrator at the centre surrounded by the days of creation, the months, the winds and the rivers of paradise, in wool on wool, with colours still strong after nine centuries.
The Beatus of Girona, a tenth-century illuminated manuscript of the Commentary on the Apocalypse, is the other: brilliantly coloured Mozarabic painting from a period when Christian Iberia was absorbing Islamic visual influence, and one of the finest of the surviving Beatus manuscripts.
Around them sit Romanesque and Gothic religious art, silver, manuscripts and altarpieces.
The cathedral's single nave is the widest Gothic nave in the world.
