Charles Bridge was begun in 1357 under Charles IV, reputedly at 5.31am on the ninth of July — a palindromic sequence of odd numbers chosen by the king's astrologers — and it took around fifty years to build. It carried all traffic between the Old Town and the Castle for four centuries.

The museum beside the bridge covers its construction: the Gothic engineering, the piers driven into the riverbed, the mortar which legend claims was mixed with eggs brought from across Bohemia, the floods that repeatedly damaged it, and the archaeology of the earlier Judith Bridge it replaced.

Models, tools, stonework and interactive displays carry it, and the museum holds material on the baroque statues added in the eighteenth century, most of which are now copies with originals in the Lapidarium.

Boat trips through the historic Certovka channel operate from the museum.
