Chengdu Wuhou Shrine Museum

The Chengdu Wuhou Shrine Museum, located in Wuhou District, Chengdu, China, is dedicated to the Three Kingdoms period, honoring Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang, and other Shu Han figures. Established in 1984, it covers approximately 150,000 square meters and comprises three main sections: the Three Kingdoms Cultural Relics Preservation Zone, the Three Kingdoms Cultural Experience Zone, and the Jinli Folk Customs Zone. The museum is recognized as a National Grade I Museum and is a key cultural relic protection unit in China. Visitors can explore historical artifacts, architectural styles from the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, and experience the rich cultural heritage of the Three Kingdoms era.

Planning your visit

Wuhou Shrine commemorates Zhuge Liang, the strategist of the Shu Han kingdom during the Three Kingdoms period, and it is the only temple in China where a ruler and his minister are venerated together — Liu Bei's tomb is on the same grounds. For Chinese visitors this is deeply familiar territory: the Three Kingdoms period of the third century is the setting of one of the four great classical novels, and Zhuge Liang is a byword for intelligence and loyalty in a way that has no Western equivalent.

The site covers around 150,000 square metres of late Ming and early Qing architecture, red walls, bamboo groves and courtyards, with statues of the Shu Han figures, stone tablets and the tomb mound. Attached is Jinli, a reconstructed old street of shops, snack stalls and teahouses — commercial and busy, but genuinely popular with locals for Sichuan street food in the evenings.

Non-Chinese visitors get more from it with context, since the significance is entirely in the stories attached to the figures rather than in the objects.
