Chinggis Khaan National Museum

The Chinggis Khaan National Museum opened in 2022, and Mongolia built it to reclaim its own narrative. Nine halls cover the steppe from the Hun Empire through the Turkic khaganates to the Mongol Empire and on to the twentieth century, holding over 10,000 objects of which the museum states 92 percent are originals rather than replicas — a pointed distinction in a country whose material heritage was scattered and suppressed during the Soviet period, when Genghis Khan could not be publicly commemorated at all.

The Great Mongol Empire halls are the centrepiece, covering the conquests, administration, the postal relay system, religious tolerance and the trade networks that ran from Korea to Hungary. AR and VR installations supplement the objects.

The museum's existence is part of a broader national reassertion since 1990 — Genghis Khan's image is now on the currency, the airport and the vodka.

It is central in Ulaanbaatar, and guided tours are available in several languages. Bookable options include private highlights tours and guided visits, which are worth taking: the chronology of steppe empires is unfamiliar to most visitors, and without it the halls read as a sequence of unconnected periods.
