Christos Kapralos was one of the significant Greek sculptors of the twentieth century, and his summer studio on Aegina is now his museum. The building sits on the shore at Livadi, and it holds sculpture, painting and ceramics across a career that moved between figurative work rooted in classical and folk traditions and increasingly abstracted forms in clay, plaster, bronze and wood.
His major work is the Monument of the Pindus, a frieze some forty metres long commemorating the Greek resistance to the Italian invasion of 1940 in the Pindus mountains, and a large portion of it is displayed here in the studio where he made it. Seeing a work of that scale in the room where it was produced, rather than installed in a public building, is the museum's distinctive offering.
Aegina is an hour by ferry from Piraeus and makes an easy day trip from Athens, with the Temple of Aphaia and the pistachio orchards as the other draws.
