The Mewar dynasty of Udaipur claims the longest unbroken royal line in the world, tracing back some 1,500 years, and unlike most Rajput houses it refused marriage alliances with the Mughals — a stance that cost it repeatedly and defines its self-image.
The City Palace is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan, built up by successive maharanas from 1553 on a ridge above Lake Pichola, and the museum occupies a substantial part of it: courtyards, mirrored and glass-inlaid chambers, the peacock mosaics of Mor Chowk, miniature paintings of the Mewar school, weapons, royal regalia and photographs.
The views over the lake to the Lake Palace are the ones that put Udaipur on posters.
The complex stays partly a residence, and separate ticketing applies to sections and to photography.
