The deconsecrated church of San Francesco in Montefalco holds a fresco cycle by Benozzo Gozzoli of 1452 covering the life of Saint Francis — painted in the apse, and among the most complete surviving Franciscan cycles outside Assisi, which is visible from the town walls.
Gozzoli trained with Fra Angelico and worked with Ghiberti, and the cycle is his major work before the Medici chapel in Florence. Perugino's Nativity in a side chapel is the other significant painting.
The complex includes a civic picture gallery, an archaeological section, and a display on the town's wine — Montefalco Sagrantino is one of Italy's more distinctive reds, made from a local grape with exceptionally high tannin.
Montefalco is called the balcony of Umbria for the views from its walls across the valley to Assisi, Spello and Perugia.
