Dublin was founded by Vikings. Norse raiders established a longphort on the Liffey in the ninth century and the settlement grew into a significant trading town, and excavations at Wood Quay in the 1970s uncovered its remains in extraordinary preservation — before the corporation built council offices on top, over one of the largest public protests in Irish history.
Dublinia covers that history across three floors: Viking Dublin with reconstructed houses, a slave market and a longship; medieval Dublin with its plague, markets and crime; and a floor on the archaeology itself, explaining how the Wood Quay material was recovered and read.
The reconstruction is aimed at families, with costumed interpreters and hands-on elements.
St Michael's Tower gives views over the city, and a bridge connects to Christ Church Cathedral.
