The Gaetano Filangieri Civic Museum occupies Palazzo Como, a fifteenth-century Renaissance palace with a distinctive diamond-point rusticated facade — and one with an unusual history: when Via Duomo was cut through the historic centre in the 1880s, the entire building was dismantled and rebuilt some twenty metres back from its original position to make way for the street.
Prince Gaetano Filangieri gave his collection to Naples in 1888 and installed it here. It runs to over 3,000 objects across the decorative and fine arts: paintings by Neapolitan masters, sculpture, arms and armour, porcelain and majolica, furniture, and a library of some 30,000 volumes. The armoury and the ceramics are particular strengths.
The collection suffered badly in 1943, when material stored for wartime safekeeping was burned by retreating German forces at Nola — a loss the museum documents rather than glosses over.
It sits on Via Duomo in the historic centre, close to the cathedral and the Cappella Sansevero. Quiet, rarely crowded, and easy to combine with the surrounding decumani. Allow an hour. The main booking is an entry ticket. Current availability is listed below.
