Gal Vihara

Gal Vihara, also known as Gal Viharaya, is a 12th-century rock temple in Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka, renowned for its four Buddha statues carved into a single granite rock face. These sculptures are considered masterpieces of ancient Sinhalese art.

Gal Vihara is four Buddha figures carved from a single granite outcrop in the twelfth century, and they are generally reckoned the finest sculpture in Sri Lanka. Commissioned by King Parakramabahu I at the height of the Polonnaruwa kingdom, they comprise a seated Buddha in meditation, a smaller seated figure in an artificial cave, a standing figure seven metres tall with arms crossed, and a reclining Buddha fourteen metres long depicting the parinirvana.

The technical achievement is in the stone itself — the sculptors worked with the granite's natural banding, so the veining runs through the figures in ways that read as deliberate, and the surface finish on the reclining figure's pillow, showing the impression of the head, is remarkably delicate for the scale. The standing figure's posture, with folded arms and an expression of sorrow, is unusual enough that its identification is still debated.

It sits within the Polonnaruwa archaeological complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Sri Lanka's medieval capital, which contains a great deal else — the Royal Palace, the Quadrangle, the Lankatilaka image house.
