Located within Krujë Castle, the museum showcases artifacts and exhibits related to Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu’s life and the resistance against the Ottoman Empire.

Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu is Albania's national hero: a nobleman taken as a hostage by the Ottomans, raised and trained in their service, who defected in 1443 and held Ottoman armies out of Albania for twenty-five years from the fortress at Krujë. His double-headed eagle standard is on the Albanian flag.

The museum stands inside Krujë Castle, built in the 1980s under Enver Hoxha to a design by the dictator's daughter and son-in-law — which is itself instructive, since the communist regime appropriated Skanderbeg heavily for its own nationalism. The building is a stylised castle rather than a restoration, and the displays lean on replicas, frescoes, weapons, armour and copies of his helmet and sword, the originals of which are in Vienna.

Whatever the museography, the setting is spectacular: the castle sits on a ridge with the plain falling away below and mountains behind.
