Gold Museum, Tankavaara

The Gold Museum in Tankavaara, Finland, is the world’s only international museum dedicated to gold prospecting and panning. Tankavaara sits in the Finnish Lapland wilderness and holds the only international museum in the world devoted to gold prospecting. Lapland had its own gold rush from the 1870s along the Ivalojoki river, and the museum covers that history — the men who went north, the conditions, the tools, the isolation — alongside Golden World, an exhibition gathering gold stories from over twenty countries, from the Klondike to Australia and South Africa.

The outdoor section is a reconstructed prospectors' village with historic buildings, cabins and equipment moved from claim sites.

Panning is the reason most people come. Visitors work a pan with real gravel from the local streams under instruction, and finding anything is genuinely possible — Lapland gold is fine but present. Tankavaara hosts gold panning championships, and the technique is harder than it looks.

The museum is open daily through the summer months, and its remote location on the road north toward Ivalo and Inari means it is normally a stop on a longer Lapland journey rather than a destination.
