Alexandria's Graeco-Roman Museum covers the period when the city was the intellectual capital of the Mediterranean world — founded by Alexander in 331 BC, ruled by the Ptolemies, home to the Library and the Museion, and the place where Greek, Egyptian, Jewish and later Roman culture mixed more thoroughly than anywhere else. The collection of over 40,000 objects documents exactly that hybridity: sculpture in which Egyptian gods wear Greek drapery, Serapis in both idioms, mummy portraits, mosaics, coins and funerary material.

The museum, founded in 1892, closed for a long and much-delayed restoration and reopened in 2023, and the redisplay is a considerable improvement on the crowded arrangement that preceded it.

Alexandria itself has relatively little standing from antiquity — earthquakes, subsidence and continuous rebuilding removed most of it, and much lies under the harbour — so this museum, together with the catacombs at Kom el-Shoqafa and Pompey's Pillar, is where the ancient city is legible.
