Henan was the heartland of early Chinese civilisation — the Shang and much of the Zhou were centred here, and four of China's historic capitals lie within the province — which makes the Henan Museum's collection exceptionally strong for the periods that matter most. Over 130,000 objects include Shang and Zhou ritual bronzes from Anyang and Zhengzhou, jade, ceramics, Buddhist stone sculpture and carvings.
The standout objects have real weight in Chinese archaeology: bone oracle inscriptions, the earliest substantial body of written Chinese; the Lotus and Crane square pot, a Spring and Autumn period bronze whose openwork lid is a landmark of the craft; and a set of bone flutes some 8,000 years old, among the oldest playable musical instruments ever found. Replica performances on the flutes are sometimes staged.
The building is a stepped pyramidal form referencing ancient observatory architecture. Admission is free with advance reservation.
