The Icelandic Aviation Museum sits at Akureyri Airport in the north, and Icelandic aviation history is more interesting than the country's size suggests. Aviation arrived early and mattered disproportionately: an island with no railways, few roads and settlements separated by glaciers, ice and impassable interior, where flying became the practical means of internal connection, and where the North Atlantic route made the country strategically significant during the Second World War and the Cold War.

The collection covers that with historic aircraft, some airworthy and flown at the museum's annual air show, alongside photographs, models, uniforms and equipment. Rescue and ambulance flying, essential in a country with dispersed communities and hostile weather, is a recurring theme.

It occupies a hangar at a working airport, which gives it an appropriately operational atmosphere.
