The Iga-ryu Ninja Museum showcases the history and techniques of ninjutsu, featuring a ninja house with hidden traps and displays of over 400 ninja tools.

Iga was one of the two heartlands of ninjutsu — the other being Koga — and the Iga-ryu Ninja Museum in the grounds of Ueno Castle covers what is actually known about the shinobi as opposed to what films invented. The distinction matters: historical ninja were intelligence gatherers, saboteurs and irregular soldiers from a specific region and social class, not the black-clad assassins of popular culture.

The centrepiece is a relocated ninja house, demonstrated by guides in costume who operate its mechanisms: revolving walls, hidden floor compartments, a false door, a concealed escape passage and a sword hidden beneath floorboards. The demonstration is quick and genuinely surprising.

Underground galleries display over 400 tools and weapons, with explanations of their real function, and a separate hall stages martial demonstrations with authentic weapons.

Iga is in Mie prefecture, reachable from Osaka or Nagoya, and the town leans into the theme — even the local train is painted as a ninja.
