Veliko Tarnovo is worth the visit regardless. It was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire from the twelfth to the fourteenth century, and the town is built into a gorge with houses stacked up the cliffs above the Yantra river, dominated by the Tsarevets fortress on its hill — one of the more dramatic townscapes in the Balkans.

The illusion museum provides the light counterweight to that history, and the scale means it occupies more than the usual hour.
