Intiñan Museum

Located just 200 meters from Quito’s Mitad del Mundo monument, the Intiñan Museum offers an interactive experience delving into Ecuador’s equatorial culture and ancestral villages. The Intinan Museum sits 200 metres from Ecuador's official Mitad del Mundo monument, and there is a well-known wrinkle worth knowing before you go. The monument was sited in the 1730s by French geodesic surveyors using the instruments of the day; modern GPS later placed the true equator a couple of hundred metres away, roughly where this museum stands. Which of the two is really on the line is a long-running local argument, and both attract visitors partly because of it.

The approach here is participatory rather than scholarly. Guides walk you through balancing an egg on a nail head, the water-draining demonstration, and tests of balance and strength said to differ on the line — some genuine equatorial effects, some showmanship, which the better guides are candid about. Alongside these are reconstructed traditional dwellings, exhibits on Amazonian cultures including shrunken heads prepared by the Shuar, solar phenomena, and ancestral village life. Tours run in Spanish and English and are included in admission.

Allow about an hour, and treat it as an entertaining introduction to Andean and Amazonian culture rather than a physics lesson.
