Karel Zeman was a Czech filmmaker who built entire worlds out of paper, glass, puppets and painted backdrops, combining live actors with animation and matte work in ways that had no real precedent — Journey to the Beginning of Time, Invention for Destruction and The Fabulous World of Jules Verne look like nineteenth-century steel engravings brought to motion. Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton and Wes Anderson have all cited him.
The museum in Malá Strana is hands-on by design. Rather than displaying props behind glass, it lets visitors operate the techniques: standing in front of painted backdrops, working with forced perspective, layering foreground miniatures against distant sets, and filming themselves inserted into Zeman's compositions. Understanding how the effects were achieved with no digital tools is the whole point.
