Germany's first museum devoted to Picasso opened in Münster in 2000, and its focus is unusual: not paintings but the graphic work, with over 800 lithographs alongside prints, ceramics and illustrated books.
That emphasis is more interesting than it sounds. Picasso worked intensively in lithography from 1945 with the Paris printer Fernand Mourlot, producing sequences in which a single image is reworked across many states — the bull reduced progressively to a few lines being the most famous. Seeing those series together shows his working process more directly than finished paintings do.
The museum occupies a classicist townhouse in the old town, and its exhibitions rotate given the light sensitivity of works on paper.
Münster itself was largely destroyed in the war and meticulously rebuilt, and the Westphalian Peace of 1648 was signed in its town hall.
