Kyoto Shibori Museum

Dedicated to the centuries-old craft of shibori dyeing, the museum displays kimono and textiles created using this intricate resist-dyeing technique, and offers visitors the chance to try dyeing their own silk scarf under expert guidance.

Shibori is resist dyeing, and it is far more demanding than the word tie-dye suggests. Fabric is bound, stitched, folded, twisted or clamped before dyeing so the dye cannot reach the compressed areas, producing patterns of extraordinary precision — some traditional Kyoto techniques require binding thousands of individual points by hand, each a few millimetres across, taking months for a single kimono. The Kyoto Shibori Museum displays kimono and textiles made this way, along with the tools and the stages of the process.

The reason to come, though, is to attempt it. The museum runs hands-on sessions where visitors bind and dye their own silk under instruction, and take the finished piece home. Options include scarves, fukusa (silk cloths used in tea ceremony) and furoshiki (wrapping cloths), and the sessions run roughly an hour to ninety minutes.

Doing it yourself is what makes the displayed kimono legible: after struggling to bind a dozen points evenly, a garment with tens of thousands of them reads differently.

The museum is central, near Nijō Castle. Bookable options are the various dyeing courses, differentiated by what you make. Sessions have limited places and are conducted with an instructor, so advance booking is necessary rather than optional. Current availability is listed below.
