Alessandro Manzoni set The Betrothed, the founding novel of modern Italian literature, in and around this town, and the lake's southeastern arm is Manzoni country. The rooms also cover Como's silk manufacture, which supplied European fashion houses for generations, and the villa culture that drew visitors from the eighteenth century onward.
