The prehistoric holdings are internationally significant: the Swabian Jura caves nearby produced the oldest figurative art known anywhere, and the museum holds Ice Age carvings in mammoth ivory around 40,000 years old, including small animal figures made by the first modern humans in Europe.

Beyond that, the collections run through Celtic and Roman Württemberg, medieval sculpture and treasury objects, the crown jewels of the kings of Württemberg, clocks, glass, and applied arts. Interactive displays are pitched at families as well as specialists.

The castle itself is worth the visit — the courtyard is used for events, and the building's layers of construction are visible.

Stuttgart is more often visited for cars than for archaeology, which means this museum is quieter than its holdings deserve.
