Louisiana is regularly named among the best museums in Europe, and the reason is the relationship between building, art and landscape. It sits on the Øresund coast north of Copenhagen, on a wooded slope above the water with Sweden visible across the sound, and the architecture — a series of low glass-walled corridors and pavilions added incrementally from 1958 — leads visitors through the collection and out into a sculpture park with Calder, Moore, Miró and Serra placed among the trees and lawns.

The collection covers modern and contemporary art from 1945 onward, with strong holdings in CoBrA, Pop, and postwar European and American work, and a Giacometti room that is among the finest anywhere. Temporary exhibitions are ambitious and internationally significant.

The design intention is that art, architecture and nature are experienced together rather than in sequence, and it works — the windows framing the sound are as considered as the hang.
