Luo Zhongli Art Museum

The Luo Zhongli Art Museum, also known as the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute Art Museum, is the largest art museum in Chongqing, China. It opened in October 2014 and is located within the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute’s Huxi Campus. The museum’s exterior features colorful ceramic tiles, constructed from discarded tiles sourced from various factories, making it both cost-effective and environmentally friendly. The museum houses a diverse collection of artworks, including Chinese paintings, oil paintings, prints, and sculptures, and serves as a cultural landmark in Chongqing.

The Luo Zhongli Art Museum is the largest in Chongqing, and its exterior is the first thing anyone mentions: the entire building is clad in coloured ceramic tiles salvaged as factory rejects and offcuts from across the region, assembled into a shifting patchwork. The approach was both cheap and deliberate, and the result is one of the more distinctive museum buildings in western China.

It belongs to the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, one of China's leading art academies, and is named for Luo Zhongli, whose 1980 painting Father — a monumental, hyperrealist portrait of a weathered peasant, painted at a scale previously reserved for Mao — is among the most significant works of post-Cultural Revolution Chinese art.

The collection covers Chinese ink painting, oil, printmaking and sculpture, with strong representation of the academy's graduates, who have been central to Chinese contemporary art since the 1980s.
