M9 is a museum of the twentieth century rather than of objects, and it takes an entirely multimedia approach: eight thematic sections across two floors using projection, interactive screens, immersive rooms and archival film to cover how Italians lived through the century — demographics, work, consumption, education, environment, politics, media.

The absence of artefacts is deliberate and divides visitors. What it does well is aggregate: statistical change, migration patterns, and the transformation of daily life from a largely rural and poor country to an industrial one, rendered visually in ways that static display cannot.

Mestre is the mainland part of the Venice municipality, where most Venetians actually live, and the museum was built as a regeneration project in a converted convent complex — which makes it a rare reason for visitors to cross into the mainland city rather than treat it as a dormitory for cheap hotels.
