Vlissingen was a Zeeland port of the first rank: a chamber of the Dutch East India Company, a privateering base, and the birthplace of Michiel de Ruyter, the admiral who took the Dutch fleet up the Medway in 1667, burned the English ships at anchor and towed away the flagship — the worst defeat in Royal Navy history.
The muZEEum covers all of it: the VOC and West India Company trade, De Ruyter's career with his personal possessions, maritime archaeology from the Scheldt, shipbuilding, and the region's relationship with the sea including the 1953 flood.
Zeeland's slave-trading role through the Middelburg company is addressed rather than omitted.
Four historic warehouses house it on the old harbour.
