The main exhibition starts with the failure of the peace after 1918 and traces the rise of fascism, the war's outbreak, occupation, resistance and collaboration in France, the Holocaust, and then the Battle of Normandy — placing D-Day inside the war rather than treating it as the whole story. Further galleries cover the Cold War that followed, and a Nobel Peace Prize gallery.

The building itself stands on ground with a specific history: the underground command bunker of General Wilhelm Richter, who commanded the German 716th Infantry Division on D-Day, lies beneath it and is part of the visit.

Caen was largely destroyed in the fighting, and the memorial gardens dedicated to the Allied nations surround the museum.
