MMM Firmian is the largest of Reinhold Messner's six mountain museums and the one he considers the centrepiece. It occupies Sigmundskron Castle, a substantial medieval fortress on a bluff above Bolzano with the Dolomites in view, which Messner acquired and restored after a long public campaign.

The theme is the relationship between people and mountains — not climbing technique but mountains as sacred objects, as subjects of art, as places of myth and as landscapes shaped by tourism. The route winds through towers, ramparts and courtyards, with Tibetan and Nepalese sculpture, European painting, ethnographic objects and Messner's own expedition material distributed through the fabric of the castle. Walking the walls is as much of the experience as the exhibits.

The setting over the Adige valley, at the meeting point of Italian and German-speaking South Tyrol, is exceptional.
