Dick Bruna drew Miffy in 1955 for his young son, and the rabbit — nijntje in Dutch — became one of the most recognisable children's characters in the world, rendered in thick black lines and a palette of five flat colours. Bruna lived and worked in Utrecht his whole life.
The Miffy Museum is designed specifically for children aged two to six, and it is unusual in taking that age band seriously rather than treating it as an afterthought. Ten themed rooms let children play at everyday activities — a house, a shop, a traffic scheme, a hospital, a theatre — with Bruna's aesthetic applied throughout. Everything is at child height and hands-on.
Across the street, the Centraal Museum's Dick Bruna House covers the artist himself for adults, including his considerable career as a book-cover designer, and combined tickets are usual.
