The Mika Tivadar Secret Museum occupies the site of a copper workshop in Budapest's seventh district — the historic Jewish quarter, which the Nazis and the Arrow Cross sealed as a ghetto in late 1944, confining tens of thousands of people in a few streets during the last months of the war.
The museum documents that history alongside the district's wider past: the workshop itself, the buildings and courtyards, and the layered lives of a quarter that has since become Budapest's nightlife centre, its ruin bars occupying the same decayed apartment blocks.
The juxtaposition is the point. Visitors drinking in Kazinczy Street are generally unaware of what happened in those buildings eighty years ago, and the museum sets out to make the fabric legible.
