Mudam Luxembourg

Mudam Luxembourg, designed by I.M. Pei, showcases contemporary art in a purpose-built facility on the site of the historic Fort Thüngen.

Planning your visit

Mudam sits on the ramparts of Fort Thüngen, a Vauban-era fortification, and I. M. Pei built the museum on the surviving foundations — the old fort walls run through and around the new structure, with a glass pavilion rising above them. Pei described it as a dialogue between the fortress and the contemporary building, and the tension between the two is the point.

The collection covers contemporary art across media — photography, design, fashion, sculpture, installation and digital work — with strong representation of Luxembourgish and international artists, and an emphasis on commissioning new work for the spaces.

Temporary exhibitions dominate the programme, so what is showing determines the visit.

The Kirchberg plateau around it holds the European institutions and the Philharmonie, making a district of contemporary architecture, and the fort's other half houses the Dräi Eechelen museum of Luxembourg's fortress history.
