MuSa – Museo di Salò

MuSa – Museo di Salò, inaugurated in June 2015, is housed in the 16th-century Church of Santa Giustina. It offers thematic collections from Roman to modern times, including archaeology, art, science, and technology.

MuSa occupies the sixteenth-century church of Santa Giustina in Salò, on the western shore of Lake Garda, and its collections are deliberately broad — archaeology from the Roman period, art history, scientific instruments, musical material and local history, arranged thematically across the deconsecrated church.

Salò's twentieth-century history is the part with weight. In 1943, after Mussolini's rescue by German commandos, the puppet Italian Social Republic was headquartered here — the Republic of Salò, the last phase of Italian Fascism, which ran a rump state on the lake until 1945. The town's association with that period is permanent and complicated, and the museum addresses it.

The scientific and musical collections reflect local figures and institutions, including the town's violin-making and its historic academy.
