The Musée des Impressionnismes sits a few hundred metres from Monet's house and garden, and its function is to place him in context — the plural in its name is deliberate. Impressionism was not one movement but several overlapping tendencies, and the museum covers the artists around and after Monet: Caillebotte, Boudin, Signac, the American painters who settled in Giverny in the 1880s and 90s to be near him, and later figures including the Japanese painter Hiramatsu.

The gardens around the museum, designed by Mark Rudkin, are an attraction in themselves and echo Monet's planting.
