Alsace makes wine unlike anywhere else in France. The region labels by grape rather than by appellation, uses tall green-stemmed bottles, and produces dry aromatic whites — riesling, gewurztraminer, pinot gris, muscat, sylvaner — on a narrow strip of hillside between the Vosges and the Rhine plain, in one of the driest climates in the country.

Its history explains the difference. Alsace passed between France and Germany repeatedly, and the winemaking tradition owes as much to the German side as the French.

The museum in Colmar covers the vineyard year, the varieties, the soils, the presses and cooperage, and the terminology of grand cru and vendanges tardives, with tastings.

Colmar sits on the wine route, and the villages along it — Riquewihr, Eguisheim, Kaysersberg — are the reason most visitors come.
