Yves Saint Laurent first came to Marrakesh in 1966 and returned constantly for the rest of his life, buying the Jardin Majorelle with Pierre Bergé in 1980 to save it from developers. The museum, opened in 2017 next to the garden, was purpose-built by Studio KO in terracotta brick laid in a pattern evoking woven fabric — the exterior reads as textile, the interior as smooth lining.

The permanent gallery holds a rotating selection from a vast archive: haute couture garments, sketches, photographs, accessories and film, arranged thematically rather than chronologically — masculine, Africa and Morocco, imaginary voyages, gardens, art. Morocco's effect on his palette is the argument the museum makes, and it is persuasive.

Alongside sit temporary exhibitions, a research library, an auditorium and a café.

The Jardin Majorelle next door, with its cobalt blue buildings and the Berber Museum, is usually combined and often sold jointly. Both are extremely popular and timed entry is necessary.
