Cervantes was born in Alcala de Henares in 1547, and the house museum recreates a prosperous sixteenth-century household of the kind his family occupied — his father was a barber-surgeon, a trade combining minor surgery with tooth-pulling and shaving.

The rooms are furnished to period: the surgery with its instruments, the kitchen, the estrado where women sat on cushions in the Moorish manner, the bedrooms and the study. Editions of Don Quixote in many languages are displayed, and the museum holds material on the Golden Age.

Cervantes led an extraordinary life — wounded at Lepanto losing the use of his left hand, captured by Barbary corsairs and enslaved in Algiers for five years, repeatedly imprisoned for debt — before writing what is generally considered the first modern novel late in life.

Alcala's university, founded in 1499, makes the town UNESCO-listed.
