The Museum of Sacred Art in Teruel occupies the Episcopal Palace and holds the religious art of the Teruel and Albarracín diocese: Gothic panel painting, polychrome sculpture, gold and silverwork, vestments and liturgical objects gathered from parish churches across a sparsely populated and often depopulated region.

That gathering is itself the story. Rural Aragón has emptied over the last century, and much of what the museum holds was brought in from villages that could no longer protect it.

Teruel is the point of the visit more broadly. The town is the centre of Spanish Mudéjar architecture — the style developed by Muslim craftsmen working under Christian rule — and its towers and cathedral ceiling are UNESCO-listed. The cathedral's painted wooden ceiling, sometimes called the Sistine Chapel of Mudéjar art, is extraordinary and is usually visited alongside the museum.

Teruel is remote, in one of the least populated parts of Spain, which keeps visitor numbers low.
