The Museu do Futebol is inside the Pacaembu stadium, built into the arches beneath the grandstand, and it treats football as the central fact of Brazilian cultural life rather than as a sport with a trophy cabinet. There is very little memorabilia. Instead the museum works through sound, film, projection and interactive installation: the roar of a crowd, radio commentary, the rhythms of the game, the way football entered music, dance and daily speech.
Sections cover the arrival of the game with British workers, its adoption and transformation by Black and working-class Brazilians against considerable resistance, the World Cup victories, the Maracanazo defeat of 1950 that remains a national wound, and the players who became national figures.
The Pelé material and the room dedicated to great goals, with commentary in Portuguese, are the emotional centre.
