Conimbriga is the best-preserved Roman town in Portugal, and its mosaics are the reason. The site holds houses of considerable wealth — the House of the Fountains, whose garden retains a working system of jets, and the House of Cantaber, one of the largest domestic buildings known from the Roman west — with floors of intricate figurative mosaic still in position.

The town's walls tell their own story: a defensive circuit thrown up hastily in the third century against Germanic incursions, cutting straight through existing buildings, which conveys the anxiety of the late empire more directly than any text.

The museum displays the movable finds — sculpture, glass, ceramics, coins, tools and jewellery — and explains the site's development from a pre-Roman settlement through Romanisation to its decline.

It sits near Condeixa, south of Coimbra.
